Hoping to have some harmless fun on April 1st? Why not mix trickery with tastiness (or not-so-tastiness!) by trying one of these food pranks? Whether you want to fool the kids or be the office jokester, these tricks are sure to get a laugh or two.
Also keep in mind that this day isn’t the only occasion when you can have extra fun with your food. Check out our tips for making your meals entertaining any day of the year.
1. Surprising Sundae
Mash some potatoes and separate the mash into ‘scoops’ (use an ice cream scoop if you have one). Place 3-4 scoops into each glass and top with gravy as you would caramel syrup. Voilà! Now it looks like you’re skipping straight to a delicious dessert, when you’re actually just serving dinner in a glass.
2. Strange Steak and Fries
If you’re skilled in the kitchen, you could make some chocolate ice cream look like a big piece of steak. Pair the slab of ‘meat’ with some pound cake cut up to look like chips. Complete the illusion with some strawberry jam playing the part of tomato sauce. Check out the full recipe here.
3. Awful Oreos
This may just be the most evil food prank imaginable. Take a packet of Oreos (or similar cream-filled biscuits) and remove the cream from each one. Squeeze in some toothpaste (make sure it’s plain white toothpaste) and carefully put the two halves back together. Anyone who bites into one of these is in for a nasty surprise! Take your abomination to work to share with colleagues or leave them at home for the kids to discover.
4. Spaghetti and Meatball Cupcakes
Most people like spaghetti and meatballs. And most people like cupcakes. So this prank is really a win-win for everyone – even the victims! However, this is also one of the trickier food pranks here, so you might want to follow a detailed recipe like this one. For the deceptive icing, you’ll need vanilla frosting (tinted with yellow food colouring and cocoa), chocolate balls and strawberry jam. This is a great option for anyone who is planning to host a dinner party on April Fools’ Day or entertain guests during the following weekend.
5. A Perfectly Eggsecuted Prank
Easter is only a week before April Fools’ Day in 2016, so why not save some of your Easter egg wrappers to set up the ultimate disappointment for chocolate lovers? Simply take the foil from some medium-large Easter eggs and wrap it around some real eggs. Warning: you won’t make any friends with this prank!
6. Inconvenient Cordial
Make some jelly. If you’re planning to prank the kids, be sure to choose a colour that matches their favourite cordial. When you’re ready to let the mixture set, separate it into some glasses and add some straws. When the jelly solidifies, it will look like glasses of cordial that are ready in the fridge to be enjoyed… but anyone who tries to drink them will be very confused!
