School holidays are approaching. But how on Earth are you going to keep the kids entertained for so long? Thankfully, the solution is simple – and it won’t cost you a fortune.

Brisbane is full of cheap activities and free spaces that are fun for the whole family. So pack your picnic basket and get your sneakers ready for an affordable, action-packed day out in Brisbane.

Mt Coot-tha Bushwalk & Lookout – Sir Samuel Griffith Drive, Toowong

Mt Cooth-tha Forest is a fantastic retreat from the busy streets of Brisbane. With its refreshing walking trails, beautiful picnic spots and its famous lookout – showing the whole city in all its wonder – this free activity is a great way to spend a day with the family.

Check out the comprehensive Mt Coot-tha Forest track map and plan your own family adventure.

BBQ and Games – New Farm Park, New Farm

The bigger the space, the more activities. And New Farm Park has a lot of space. You can use the public barbeque or set up a picnic under the shade of stunning trees. Then use the endless grass for a game of family cricket or soccer.

New Farm Park is pet-friendly, so bring along your loyal family friend. Powerhouse Park is also just next door, letting them make new friends and run free off their leash.

Frew Park – Frew Street, Milton

It’s as if the architecture behind Frew Park came directly from the imagination of a child. And so did the pricing, because it’s absolutely free! The Arena playground is perfect for kids between 10 and 15 years and its lower level areas serve the playful minds of younger children.

Climb, slide, jump, make music, and play. Frew Park unleashes creativity and just lets kids be kids.

The Corner – QLD State Library, South Brisbane

Brisbane’s dreamlike nook, The Corner, is a kid’s paradise. From dress-ups and reading, to painting and crafting art, there’s no way your kids will run out of activities in this free space. Open 7 days a week, it also features engaging activities between 10am to 3pm.

Combine this activity with a visit to the Queensland Museum just next door. General admission is free and kids can engage with natural history and science.

Affordable Movies – Southbank Cineplex, South Brisbane

Take the kids on a trip to mystical lands, while remaining comfortable in a soft seat. Southbank Cineplex shows new family movies and showcases the much-loved classics, like Disney films. Walk along the river and enjoy everything that Southbank has to offer, then end the day relaxing and watching a good flick.

Standard kid’s tickets are $4.50, while adult tickets start at $8.50. Or you can take advantage of Southbank Cineplex’s budget Tuesdays, where adult tickets are priced at $6.50 all day and night.
